Courtesy of Raw Story: During a conference call with evangelicals on Tuesday, Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) called upon “Christian warriors” and “Christian soldiers” to “stand our ground” against President Barack Obama, who he said is trying to ”remove any trace of religion from American life,” a message inspired by “Satan” himself.
Perry made the comments during a conference call with pastors and evangelicals nationwide, as first cited by Right Wing Watch. He was taking part in an ongoing religious campaign called “40 Days to Save America.” Other participants in the calls this week include Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), and even former Jack Abramoff co-conspirator Ralph Reed.
Introducing his guest, pastor Rick Scarborough, one of the “40 Days” organizers, credited the governor’s spirituality with ending the Texas drought. (Update: The Texas drought is actually still going on.) But it was Perry himself who did the real preaching.
In audio published to the campaign’s website, Perry claims that the constitutional provision which guarantees the right to religious freedom actually drives faithful Christians out of the public sphere. “This iron curtain or whatever you want to call it between the church and people of faith and this separation of church and state is just false on its face,” he said.
He went on to insist that it is a Christian’s duty to “defend life” by electing women who want to restrict women’s health services. “Satan runs across the world with his doubt and with his untruths and what have you, and one of the untruths out there is driven, is that people of faith should not be involved in the public arena,” he continued.
The Texas governor added that there’s “spiritual warfare” going on over “President Obama and his cronies in Washington” attempts to “remove any trace of religion from American life.” He did not specify how the president, a fellow Christian, was supposedly doing this. Perry also warned that it would be up to “Christian warriors, Christian soldiers” and Americans in general to “stand our ground and firmly send a message to Washington that our nation is about more than just some secular laws.”
You know this is an indication of WHY, out of all of the choices for the GOP ticket this year, that the clearly flawed and unready for prime time Mitt Romney emerged victorious. Simply put because the other choices (With the possible exception of John Huntsman) were completely out of their fucking minds.
You know this kind of uber religiosity in the year 2012 is both startling and frightening.
We are watching people in the Middle East behaving like animals due to the idea that somebody dared to disrespect their prophet, and acting horrified at the thought, while among our fellow Americans there are many who are on the brink of the very same kinds of irrational behaviors. Essentially many of these people are just one, or perhaps two, perceived slights against Christianity away from burning down mosques, temples, and synagogues all over the country.
All it takes is somebody in authority, like for instance the governor of your state, telling you that you are a "warrior" and that you need to "stand your ground" against the forces of Satan, and the next thing you know we have the Crusades taking place in our own backyard.
In short a blind faith in ANY deity makes a person infinitely malleable in the hands of those who know how to bend them to their will, simply by tapping into their victim hood and sense of "specialness," before sending them forth to do all manner of crazy and dangerous things on behalf of their "prophet" or religious leaders. So long as people are willing to suspend their critical thinking they will always be the pawns of those who sense their weakness and desire to feel connected to something bigger than themselves.
It is a useful tool for even an identified disphit like Rick Perry. As evidenced above.
Is THIS a good time to remind everybody that this ridiculous crap is rather rapidly coming to an end?
Averaging across the two measures of atheism, the entire world population would cross the atheist threshold by about 2038 (average of 2035 for disbelief and 2041 for religiosity). Although 2038 may seem improbably fast, this requires only a shift of approximately 1 percent per year whether in religiosity or belief in God. Using the Human Development Index as a clock suggests an even earlier arrival for the atheist transition.
And considering the craziness up above, this transition cannot come fast enough in my opinion. Of course you KNOW which country will be the last to make the transition don't you? Oh yeah, the good ole US of A.
But it is STILL coming.
